Phil K"In today's age of electronic music, the rise to stardom is often as fast as the fall into obscurity. Solidarity is hard to come by, but Melbourne native Phil K has proven that when it comes to DJing, experience, vision, and just plain persistence pay off. His twenty plus years as a world class DJ have won him one of the largest cult followings in the EDM community. Phil has been labeled as one of, if not the most technically-skilled DJs in the world. With a fan base ranging from peers like Sasha, Seaman, Meat Katie and James Zabiela, touting Phil as his "favorite DJ", to clubbers from Sri Lanka to Seattle, it’s hard to argue; Phil K has truly left his mark. Phil K developed his trade from meager beginnings, purchasing his first turntable in 1984 after saving enough cash from work at a fast food chain. After years sharpening his mixing abilities and spinning at any party or event that would have him, he progressed to playing out at the biggest clubs and hottest parties in Melbourne, including the famous "Sunny." He continued on to the hottest clubs in Australia and was crowned with the coveted Australian Dance Music Awards "Best DJ," "Best Radio Show," and "Lifetime Achievement" awards. Described on the decks as a "mind blowing machine" by UK's Meat Katie, Phil's tenacious mixing abilities, track selection, and cutting-edge style became crystal clear to the international scene. He soon found himself supporting various acts from Kraftwerk to Sasha and devastating crowds at festivals such as Glastonbury, Sonar, and Big Day Out and countless international clubs such as Fabric, Zouk, and Ministry of Sound. Phil's DJ mix cds have left listeners begging for more. With 7 under his belt, including Therapy Sessions with Dave Seaman and a Y4K release, fans are always in anticipation of his latest compilation. One of Phil's most notable mix achievements was Balance 004, which was voted by DJMag as one of the top ten cds of 2002, thus skyrocketing the series into the international dance scene as one of the most respected DJ series in the world. As if Phil's tenacious spinning wasn't enough, his productions have also enveloped DJs and fans across the globe. His early achievements were collaborations with fellow Aussies Andy Page and Ivan Gough, developing one of the the first definitive breakbeat anthems "Lydian and the Dinosaur" in the late 90's. Other projects include work with Atlanta phenom producer Habersham, such as 2005 single "Cloudbrake." Phil's largest bought of production has been been with Australian production powerhouse Luke Chable. Together, known as Lostep, Phil and Luke have ravaged the dance scene with various hits including "Burma," "The Roots," and their recent Global Underground artist album titled "Because We Can." Another angle of annihilation in Phil's arsenal is his visual expertise as a DVJ. Phil has a strong relationship with Pioneer as a sponsored representative for the past 7 years developing products, modifying equipment, and playing with the toys that mere mortals get their hands on 6 months to a year later. This position was not achieved by megastardom, but by shocking Pioneer engineers through his ability to abuse their equipment and do things beyond what they were designed to do. Many features currently available on a wide array of Pioneer Pro DJ equipment is the fruit of this relationship. Phil's abilities to mix videos and sound into experience has branded him as one of the best DVJ's in the world. His skill is best described by Joyce Shintani from Massachusetts Institute of Technology after she witnessed Phil's DVJ performance at the 2005 Sonar Music Festival..."Pulsing with an urban energy recalling Jean-Michel Basquiat, Phil K mirrors glimpses of a fragmented society and submits them to the organizing principles of music. His way of making art in the club context is a contribution to the best of what electronica offers today..." (MIT Computer Music Journal, December 2005). Despite all the aforementioned success, Phil K remains humble, regarding himself as a quiet achiever, an artist with the goal of keeping electronica evocative. As technology continues to advance exponentially, Phil will be there to command its obedience. Fans, DJs, and critics alike can rest assure that with Phil K, the best is yet to come. " More info... |

Mike CallanderWhat kind of DJ do the Aussie promoters call upon to keep a dancefloor moving after acts like Booka Shade or Luciano? And what kind of DJ warms up for SuperMayer, John Aquaviva and Alex Smoke on the same weekend? Or before Lindstrom at a festival, before Marc Houle at a club, and then a closing set after Stephan Bodzin on the same night? This is the pivotal role played by Mike Callander in his beloved hometown of Melbourne.Mike Callander's experience as a DJ is as diverse as one of his sets. With a unique and edgy sound, and a versatile approach to mixing and programming, Mike is one of Melbourne's only DJs who might play to a house, techno or progressive dancefloor on any given night. Mike has held long-standing residencies at some of Melbourne's most important clubbing institutions such as Sunny, Fokus, and Nano, and currently at Poison Apple and Pretty Simple, but perhaps his most treasured residency was at Honkytonks, for which he also recorded a mix CD “The Last Dance” that made its way into record stores across Australia and as far away as Japan. Since then Mike has toured all across Australia and New Zealand, and as far afield as Berlin, Los Angeles, Madrid and Malaysia, playing alongside artists as diverse as Mathew Jonson, Michael Mayer, Radioslave, Agoria (at Berlin's Watergate), M.A.N.D.Y (both in Melbourne and Berlin), Alexkid, Optimo. Steve Bug, Sven Vaeth and Mr C (in Melbourne and Berlin), plus bands such as Fujiya & Miyagi (in Madrid), Booka Shade and Trentemoeller. Mike's DJing has also earned accolades from countless touring international artists, with many labelling him one of Australia's finest - most notably Get Physical’s DJ T., who invited Mike to play in Berlin at his anniversary event to celebrate 20 years of DJing. Outside the clubs, Mike has made numerous appearances on radio such as Triple J's Mix Up (both as a guest and seasonal resident DJ), and on Melbourne’s Kiss FM. And yet Mike feels this is all just the beginning, as he has just launched his label “Haul Music” alongside Christian Vance and Craig McWhinney, and signed further productions to various labels such as Junkbeats and Freakshow Disco Productions. |

Dave PhamDave Pham began chasing his musical aspirations by collecting vinyl in the early nineties. This collection merely began as Dave couldn’t quite find the music he sought after on any other format. For many years he only had the use of a very primitive stereo and one rather beaten up old turntable. After befriending a local Dj who lent Dave his decks, Dave began his mixing expedition and never looked back. Over 10 years have past, and since these humble beginnings Dave Pham has become on of Australia’s most sought after Techno and Electro artists. At first Dave made his name in the techno world, choosing to play harder, noisier and more challenging sounds than his pears. This remains Dave’s preference to this day and he always draws a crowd of fans who go there to hear what amazing tracks he will pull from his bag of tricks. Since 2000, Dave has been experimenting with crossing Techno with other genres of music such as Electro and Experimental sounds and although the ride was rough with fans at the beginning, the new style he was playing soon began to draw even a larger crowd. In 2009 Dave is now received by audiences, other Deejay’s and promoters as being the most versatile Deejay around who is perfect for support, or main act, and can set the tone of the whole night. |

Dean MillsonWhile some artists may shy away from being labelled ‘progressive’ these days, Dean Millson is certainly not one of them. From the moment as a ten year old in 1986, when a pre-teenage interest in music (not unlike like most boys) was transformed into a lifetime passion upon accidentally tuning in a hip-hop show on Melbourne’s 3PBS, his appetite and appreciation for forward-thinking sounds has never really wavered.
Many years later, it was an encounter with the sounds of Laurent Garnier at Shed 14 in Melbourne’s revered docklands one morning late in 2000, where an interest in electronic music nurtured throughout the mid-nineties by the likes of Underworld, Depeche Mode, Cold Cut and Autechre, grew into a passion for sharing his love of music with others.
Rather than Techno however, it was the deep progressive house of John Digweed that quickly provided the inspiration for the musical direction that Dean would choose to explore first as a DJ. At a time when Melbourne’s progressive music scene was dominated almost exclusively by the likes of icons such as Sean Quinn, Kasey Taylor, Mark James & Chris Meehan, Dean decided to create a vehicle to give opportunities to a new wave of Melbourne’s up and coming DJ talent. On a very rainy Thursday between Christmas and New Year in 2001 in the side-room of Melbourne’s now infamous Salt Nightclub, Private Function was born. From those small beginnings, PF–as it affectionately became known–grew into a Melbourne institution, supporting Australia’s world-class talent such as Phil K, Luke Chable, Ivan Gough, Vance Musgrove, Rollin Connection (Darius Bassiray & Daniel Banko) and Steve May. Over the next five years, Private Function was also responsible for introducing Melbourne dancefloors to the sounds and talents of a number of international artists–hosting the inaugural Australian tours for the likes of Americans Steve Porter, Habersham along with Dutch ‘trouser’ Matthey Dekay.
Come 2007 it could be said that things have come full circle for Dean. With his passion turning towards techno again, he was invited to support Laurent Garnier (in his first Australian tour since that seminal night at the docks almost seven years earlier) and a reinvented Robert Babicz (aka Rob Acid). The beginning of 2007 also saw the birth of a new concept from Dean–Pretty Simple–a new techno-focussed brand, developed in collaboration with inner city Melbourne club Ffour. Since launching with what was, at the time, arguably one of the strongest local lineups seen in Melbourne for many years, Pretty Simple quickly became Melbourne’s premier weekly purveyor of deep techy beats–hosting guests along the way so far such as Pig & Dan (SPN), Habersham (USA), A Guy Called Gerald (UK), Jona (GER), Konrad Black (CAN), 2000 & One (NDL) and Gaiser (CAN). It’s at Pretty Simple where you will generally find Dean holding court each Saturday night with the ever challenging closing set, digging deep and pushing his sound forward into the early hours of the morning–progressive in the real sense of the word.

Gavin KeitelAmongst the Melbourne electronic dance music community, Gavin Keitel is the quiet achiever to have made the biggest impact. With 18 years of professional DJing behind him, starting out at age 16 in Darwin, and culminating in his outstanding performances at his residencies at Melbourne's Sunny, 161 and other important underground clubs, Gavin continues to hold some of Melbourne's longest standing and influential residencies. He has kept his eye not on the prize, but on the movement. Keitel is more interested in blowing someone's mind with an intelligent selection of records rather than trying to be a superstar. As such, he has avoided becoming a product of any big promotion machine and has aligned himself with good music, rather than brands, labels and crews. Instead of being the pin-up boy, Gavin is the DJ that any crew might call to get the job done right, and to add credibility to the event. Whether it be the local house club, the 8000 person event, or the national tour, he is often entrusted with the most delicate set times for the most important events. Why? Because he is focused on the moment, the movement, and the sound. "If you've got a cutting edge record that you want to use to take a club to the next level, but you get the timing wrong, you've wasted the moment. My approach to key mixing and knowing my records inside out means that I never miss that opportunity." The result for Gavin is a style of DJing that is described by his peers as simply brilliant. Perfect, even. But for Gavin, it's not a big deal, it's just how it should be done. He is amongst the hardest working and most respected DJs in the country. Gavin is not concerned about which bill he's playing on next, or which big names he has supported in the past. Instead, he is preoccupied with the flow of emotion and energy in each record, and in perfecting the craft of controlling the relationship between those records for the benefit of the dancefloor. His frame of reference is between education and entertainment, but, in his own words, "You've got to give the dancefloor a bit of credit, instead of slamming out hit after hit". Whether Gavin is exploring the depths of a Sunny set, maintaining a house groove or pushing the German minimal tip, he lets the music do the talking. A DJ set at the hands of Gavin Keitel is a pleasure in any music lover's books. He brings with him the highest level of professionalism, coupled with a raw passion for what he does. That is why he has been, and will continue to be one of Australia's premier league DJs. |

Jamie StevensEverybody knows that Australia is equally synonymous with stereotypes about shrimps as it is with high-quality electronic music. Jamie Stevens, from dual ARIA winning band Infusion, is just one such shrimp with such talent and flair behind the turntables who is fast becoming the main course with a bag of aural delights. As a producer Jamie has an immense discography which has got him work with not just under the Infusion name, but co-producing with other artists, concocting some devastating bootlegs as well as writing a movie score or two in-between. Jamie’s ability to produce imaginative yet cohesive music has also seen him land remix duties for Booka Shade, John Digweed, Deepchild, Miki Litvak & Ido Ophir, Chris Fortier and Solead whilst other remixes were commissioned for Anthony Pappa's and Darren Emerson's labels. Praise for these solo remixes have come from the contemporary stalwarts of the electronic music scene such as Adam Beyer, Danny Howells, Thomas Schumacher and Laurent Garnier. In 2008 Jamie co-founded a new record label for upfront and original music; the result was ‘Dieb Audio.’ Jamie managed to get the label straight into the limelight with Keep Her Space (also remixed by Smith & Selway), a deceptive slow burning tune which ultimately ignites. The success saw it feature in all the highest ranks of the DJ hierarchy as well as appearing on John Digweed’s, Anthony Pappa’s, Carl Cox’s and Dave Seaman’s latest compilations. The label has since released tracks from such artists as Tiger Stripes, Umek, Florian Kruse, Darko Esser, DJ Yellow and Perc amongst a host of others. |

MuskaThe mixed-genre set may seem like a daunting prospect to many DJs, but for Michael Muska itmeans a set without limitations, enabling him to take punters on an endlessly enthralling journey of sound which has catapulted him to success in the infancy of his DJing career. His ability to blur boundaries and defy industry trends whilst still holding and rocking the dance floor really is why Muska is not just a DJ, but an entertainer. Perth native Michael Muska, better known as DJ Muska, attended his first rave at the age of 16. By the age of 18 he was arduously collecting vinyl of all genres, with d&b and breaks in particular prevalent in the west at the time. He would mix endlessly at home and after parties to refine his sound. Due to his undeniable passion for music he visited the Mecca of dance music in Australia – Melbourne - for 12 months at the age of 18. He returned to WA to showcase his new influences, and his fledgling new brand of techno, incorporating dirty baselines and groove. Alas, the scene in Perth was not moving in a similar direction, so Muska moved back to Melbourne. It was there he attained a job at Revolver as a bartender, the venue hailed as the hub of Melbourne underground music at the time. It was also the home of the DJ’s DJ (and local legend), Boogs, who became one of Muska's biggest inspirations, and closest friends. After settling into his new home city, Muska started the Mixed Messages parties with DJ Tahl (Nick Hamilton) and Shane Tavish. The party soon became a platform for all types of artists non discriminative to genres, a style of party Melbourne had never seen before, inspired from a history of loving all types of music. In 2006 Muska’s profile started to gain momentum after he was invited by Boogs to play at Revolver Sunday mornings. This pseudo-residency lasted a few consecutive weeks with his best friend and colleague Tahl and gave him the opportunity to have his unique sound (a hybrid of underground techno and accessible club music) heard by the masses. This led to residencies at a number of clubs including Revolver, Candy Bar, Roxanne Parlour, Escobar, TFU, Bimbo Deluxe, Lucky Coq and more. However, being approached by Brown Alley at the end of 2008 to join their crew and resident lineup saw Muska reach a level in his career that secured his place as one of Melbourne's most in demand DJs. It was at Brown Alley for the first time that Muska felt he was able to showcase his true and most experimental sound and DJ sets, as well as collaborate and run his own events showcasing some of Melbourne's biggest underground parties. Today you’ll find Muska supporting basically every major techno touring act in Melbourne, playing at parties such as Darkbeat, Likes Of You, Sunny, Lucky Coq Saturday nights, summer Festivals and his own party concept Mixed Messages. On top of this the talented jock manages to fit in regular national tours. Muska has hosted & supported internationals such as: Lutzenkirchen / Tomcraft / Martain Eyerer / Drumattic Twins / Worthy / Dekline / Chris Fortier / ANTIX / Stephen Bodzin / Meat Katie / Rouge Element / Elite Force / Mark Henning / Peter Juergen / Shapeshifter / Ewan Pearson / Kid Dub / Style Of Eye / Chew Fu Phat / Ed rush & Optical / Dave Spoon / Proxy / Jenifer Cardini / Matrik / Mark Romboy / Daniel Steinberg / Thomas Schumacher / Silicon Soul / Slam / Fergie / Stanton Warriors / Audion / Oxia / Dub Funk / Pan Tone / Jim Rivers / Lee Combes / Teebee & Calyix / TRG / DeadMau5 / Ricco Tubbs / SOS / Hybrid + more The range of artists listed is an indication of the diversity of sound Muska has passionately displayed from his inception. Of late Muska has made his way into the production field - look out in the near future for solo projects and collaborations with some of Melbourne’s most respected and internationally recognized producers. A man on the up, Muska balances his DJing, event promotion and management, and music production, with unmatched vigour. As one of Melbourne’s highest profile DJs he is also undoubtedly one of it’s hardest working. After travelling over 3000km in pursuit of his passion, this entertainer is only at the start of a life long journey. www.myspace.com/djmuska |

Chris FortierFrancois K, Vitalic or Dave Clarke might not be the first three names to come to mind when you mention the DJ Chris Fortier. However, these are the last three records that close his recent 3 hr set at The Loft in Barcelona. While many people may claim to know Chris’ sound, with their focus on continually labelling him one thing or another, Chris is equally as focused on his efforts to push back the musical boundaries. It is testament to the man, that he continues to develop his sound and musical direction, after all, as the man says himself “I just like to play good underground music, full stop.” It is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’ determination to continue to push the envelope can be seen in all aspects of his career. Proof of this can be found on his recent triple CD compilation Balance 007–boasting tracks from across the musical spectrum like David Gilmore Girls, Global Communication and Floppy Sounds through to Slam, Matthew Jonson, Rabbit in the Moon and Bent–through to his recent solo production under the 40oz moniker. |

Danny HowellsDanny is one of the few DJs on the scene today that truly has a style of his own. With his passion for all styles of music and infectious personality, Danny has created a unique, eclectic sound that has established him as one of the top DJs in the world. Danny is one of the hardest working and most dedicated individuals in the business with over 16 years experience and a hectic touring schedule that constantly takes him around the world. He's played in the world's coolest clubs and held residencies at Arc, Twilo, Renaissance, Home, and Bedrock, so its no coincidence that he's been placed in DJ Magazine's top 100 DJs in the world for the last 9 years.Danny has mixed compilations for the acclaimed Choice series on Azuli, which received fantastic reviews worldwide, whilst previously he underwent an intense world tour to promote his addition to the long running Global Underground series, GU27 Miami - having already released a Nu-Breed and a 24/7 mix for the label, Danny was the obvious choice. This adds to Danny's continually growing back catalogue of mixes for labels such as Renaissance as well as his own Nocturnal Frequencies series. Together with production partner Dick Trevor, the pair have been responsible for many stand out tracks, including the timeless Persuasion/Repercussion on Bedrock Records, Breathe on Renaissance Records (which was recently re-released on Cr2 with some killer new remixes) and Kinkyfunk on Yoshitoshi Records. Danny has come a long way since his early beginnings DJ’ing at Bedrock in his hometown of Hastings, though his complete love of all music remains the same. He likes to champion his own special tracks and records that nobody else has latched on to and has a way of combining cutting edge grooves with crowd pleasing dynamics that enable him to connect with his audience making him one of the hottest DJs in the world. |

Nic FanciulliNic Fanciulli is a young and fresh DJ, producer and remixer – currently one of the hottest rising talents in the UK. After destroying it for the Darkbeat 5th Birthday we welcome Nic back to Melbourne !From being a shy, talented DJ plying his trade as resident at his local club, to becoming a global superstar, the rise and rise of Nic Fanciulli has been well documented. He has graced countless covers of the most respected dance publications whilst his name repeatedly pops up when clubbers discuss the finest DJ talent in recent years. 2007 saw Nic join forces with James Zabiela for their One+One alliance, causing something of a press frenzy they toured across the globe, made some original productions in the form of ‘No Pressure’ and ‘Rover’ and released a double CD. Wasting no time Nic then went back in the studio with Skylark partner Andy and the result was their first artist album; ‘I-Panik’ was released in November of 2007 with a full remix package coming in Spring 2008. The likes of Laurent Garnier praised the album and the press were blown away – citing it as an intelligent piece of electronica. The remix package sees contributions from acts as diverse as Joris Voorn, Funk Dvoid, Joel Mull, and many others. With a list of achievements that already overshadows many DJs ten years his senior, its clear that Nic Fanciulli has proven how combining genuine talent with dedication can go a long way. And whilst his record label, residencies, productions and compilations continue to open the ears of thousands of people across the planet, the fact he has a whole host of future projects up his sleeve reveals the best is still to come… |

Habersham aka KompositWhen you need edgy, underground electronic music Habersham is the one to bring it to you. And he’s brought it to every continent, building one of the strongest reputations as the come-to man for cutting edge, futuristic noise in all its forms for over ten years.Dubbed a leader of the former progressive movement, Habersham saw early success and worldwide acclaim particularly for a handful of seminal releases: Cloudbrake, the tweaked-out Furball, both written with Phil K, Transparent Sound with the invasive Follow The White Rabbit, tech anthem Dryspell, Squarepusher-esque My Effingham Sound and his infamous emotion-heavy remix of The Unthinkable. Always drawing on stylistic influences such as Jazz, House, classic RnB and Soul, Drum and Bass, IDM, Electro and experimental Techno, his audience was presented with genre-bending cuts and quality second to none. But when he saw the progressive genre becoming diluted with formulaic, predictable artists and stigmas, Habersham was among the first of his peers to break away and experiment with unconventional, creative song writing. Habersham pioneered his sound utilizing off the cuff, dirty grooves with intense and surprising moments that aurally shine, like the sparkles on a tall glass of introspect. Most recently Habersham’s discography shows a mature, polished subtlety and technical evolution. Outside The Box presented even more shades of glitchy warmth and organics, Song of The Lizard, a Miles Davis-like soundtrack for ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,’ his remix of Revitalized reminiscent of Thom Yorke, the twisted indefinable vibes of the Lorenzo rerub and as The Ones With Many Faces (TOWMF), a collaborative project between Habersham and Rift with full visual artillery provided by Cary Longchamps. Stay tuned for a monumental, timeless album currently in the works. Continuing to shake the foundation of his musical niche, he pushes forward through his Lobotomy imprint, an outlet dedicated to music and artists as uncompromising as himself. Consistently bringing the world’s greatest talent to the digital stage, Lobotomy’s artist roster reads like an excerpt from President Bush’s Beat Terrorism Watch List: Phil K, Vance Musgrove, Fine Cut Bodies, Rob Dowell, Andy Page, Datguy, Stryke, Pig and Dan, Somfay, Kriece, Dustin Zahn, Eidolon, ilmli, Jason Short, Coalition of the Killing, Rift, Bil ‘SOTEG’ Bless and Jamie ‘Kilowatts’ Watts as Skeetaz, TOWMF and many more. With huge respect from the heavyweights of all genres, the label continues to grow as a favorite of the world’s best DJs and counts James Zabiela, Lee Burridge, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, Nic Fanciulli, Oliver Lieb, Danny Howells, Adam Beyer, Joel Mull, Agaric, Paco Osuna amongst Lobotomy’s regular players. It’s easy to see why Habersham is currently putting his focus into the label, releasing the majority of his present and future discography on Lobotomy, a home with no limits, no expectations – except the unexpected. |

FergieFergie (aka Robert Ferguson), a DJ of international standing for the past decade, has never had a stronger and more vibrant aural identity. Playing the kind of music he wants, determined not to be held back by perceptions and tags from the past, he continues to be a global representative for electronic music by consistently breaking down underground barriers and bringing new music to the people, without compromise. There is no doubt that Fergie has firmly re-established himself as a producer of innovative exciting music that really takes a hold of you. Having dedicated himself to the studio for the past few years, where he totally immersed himself in his passion for music, this has been a true labour of love for Fergie: ”I just wanted to go back and take time to rediscover what the music meant to me; how it made me feel, the buzz, the excitement. To find a sound that would reflect my individuality as a DJ and producer and in some way to recapture all of that in my productions” (Fergie). Clearly he has found his sound and the results are very evident in the free flow of original productions and remixes being consistently supported by the likes of Sasha, Digweed, Dubfire, Laurent Garnier, Miss Kitten and Slam. His ever growing ‘Excentric Muzik’ label has been hailed by Carl Cox as his “label of 2008”, with Cox going on to license several productions for his forthcoming Space compilation this summer. Underground cuts such as ‘Anon’, ‘To The Core’ and ‘Blackeye-P’ have helped to instill Fergie and Excentric at the forefront of serious peak time electronica. Excentric off-shoot label ‘Rekluse’ (launched at the tail end of last year) has got off to a storming start with first release ‘2nd To None’ by Umek refusing to leave the Beatport techno charts almost half a year after it’s release, peaking at the number 1 spot along the way. |
